From village to metropolis

How a rustic fishing village became the bustling centre of Altona

The tour takes in the area around the Große Bergstraße and the interesting, yet often neglected, old centre of Altona with its roots in shipping and fish trading.

Once an area built for the dock workers and the religious centre of Altona´s Jewish congregation, this was also where the royal Danish court physician Johann F. Struensee lived and started his career. Find out more about the dramatic struggle for power and love between the Danish queen Caroline Mathilde, her husband King Christian the Seventh and the physician and enlightenment philosopher Struensee that ensued later at the court in Copenhagen.
The quarter, with its green belt of parks leading down to the popular promenade along the River Elbe, is an exciting area full of surprises waiting to be discovered, such as the "Perlenkette" string of impressive modern buildings.
The tour includes a visit to one of Altona´s oldest harbour pubs,
"Zum Schellfischposten".
